Here’s a look at hydrogen embrittlement—the process that makes metals brittle!
Key Features
Observing Hydrogen Embrittlement, Which Causes Metals to Become Brittle!
This device, developed in collaboration with the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), scans the sample surface with an electron beam to capture both SEM images and surface hydrogen ion images, enabling analysis that reflects surface topography and surface conditions.

Non-destructive, non-contaminating real-time observation of hydrogen analysis
While hydrogen is a leading candidate for clean energy, a phenomenon known as hydrogen embrittlement—in which metals become brittle due to hydrogen permeating into the material—poses a significant challenge. The issue of hydrogen embrittlement has been studied for a long time, but detecting the location of hydrogen within materials has proven difficult. This device allows for the observation of hydrogen’s temporal behavior while directly supplying it, enabling evaluation without contamination from chemicals or sample destruction.
